1. A systematic search of population studies found the proportion of people with knee pain who have radiographic osteoarthritis ranges from 15% to 76%, and the proportion of people with radiographic knee OA who have pain ranges from 15% to 81%. The authors conclude that knee x-ray results 'should not be used in isolation when assessing individual patients with knee pain'.

2. A prospective longitudinal study of 64 patients with acute medial meniscus posterior root tear managed non-operatively found 76.6% continued non-operative care and only 23.4% converted to surgery (median 6 months). Pain fell from 7.6 to 1.3 on an 11-point scale within 6 months and stayed there — even though structural degeneration on MRI progressed. Symptoms and structure moved in opposite directions.

The 2019 ACR/Arthritis Foundation guideline makes STRONG recommendations for exercise, weight loss in people with overweight or obesity, self-efficacy and self-management programs, tai chi, cane use, tibiofemoral bracing, topical NSAIDs, oral NSAIDs and intra-articular glucocorticoid injections in knee OA; radiofrequency ablation for knee OA is only a conditional recommendation.

4. In a 2-year, double-blind RCT of 140 patients with symptomatic knee OA and ultrasound synovitis, intra-articular triamcinolone 40 mg every 12 weeks caused significantly GREATER cartilage volume loss than saline (index-compartment cartilage thickness change -0.21 mm vs -0.10 mm; between-group difference -0.11 mm, 95% CI -0.20 to -0.03) with NO significant difference in pain (-1.2 vs -1.9 on the WOMAC Likert pain subscale).

## Do I need an MRI for knee pain?

Often, you don't. A slow ache can usually be assessed from your history, an exam and sometimes an x-ray. An MRI may help after a major injury, when the knee locks or when its answer would change care. Ask what the picture needs to settle.

## What does an x-ray show for knee arthritis?

It shows bone, alignment, bone spurs and the space inside the joint. Cartilage doesn't appear directly, though a smaller space can suggest that it has worn down. The image can't measure soreness, so the doctor also needs to hear how your knee feels.

## What are the symptoms of arthritis in the knee?

Common signs include aching with walking, stiffness after rest, swelling and less motion. Stairs or standing from a chair may become harder. These signs can have other causes. Your doctor uses the pattern, the exam and sometimes a picture to sort them out.

## Does arthritis in the knee cause swelling?

It can. The lining inside the joint may become irritated and make extra fluid. Slow swelling after activity differs from fast swelling after an injury. A very hot, red knee with fever needs same-day care because infection is possible.

## What is causing my knee pain?

Arthritis, a sore tendon, kneecap strain and meniscus trouble are common causes. The hip or back can also send pain toward the knee. The sore spot and the movement that starts the ache help narrow the cause. An exam is often needed.

## Do I need surgery for a meniscus tear?

Not always. A meniscus is the firm pad between the knee bones. Tears caused by wear may improve with exercise and time. A locked knee or a major new injury is different. Your symptoms, strength and exam guide the choice.

## When is knee pain an emergency?

Get prompt help when you can't stand after an injury or the knee looks bent. Fast swelling, locking, new numbness or a cold foot also matter. A red, hot joint with fever may be infected. Those signs call for care sooner than a routine appointment.

## Who treats knee arthritis in Scottsdale?

A primary-care doctor can start the exam for a gradual ache. A doctor who handles joint problems can assess lasting limits. A surgeon may help when function is poor and surgery is being considered. Choose someone who connects your symptoms to the knee picture.

## Does the Arizona heat make knee arthritis worse?

Heat isn't known to damage an arthritic knee. Weather can still change how much you walk and how your body handles activity. Track movement, swelling and next-day soreness. That record is more useful than blaming the temperature alone.

## Bring your knee picture and the story behind the ache

If the soreness hasn't eased, describe where it starts and which tasks are harder. Bring old reports and your medicine list. Ask what the exam suggests, whether another picture would help and how you will judge progress.
